Residency Program Curriculum

Our curriculum meets all requirements for the AAFP, ABFM & the ACGME.

The format is 13 four-week blocks/year.

PGY-1

  • Community Medicine - 1 block - exposure to programs & clinics that help serve your patients. Teach Tar Wars and Human Growth & Development in area schools.
  • Emergency Medicine - 1 block - one on one with ER Doc in the regional medical center.
  • General Pediatrics - 1 block - get your feet wet with the little ones' special needs.
  • General Surgery - 1 block - one on one with local surgeons. All aspects of surgical practice.
  • Mole - 2 weeks - ER shift + Family Medicine Center pt phone calls from home after midnight.
  • Neonatal ICU- 1 block - one on one with local neonatologist in our level 2+ nursery.
  • Night Float - 1 week (late in year). Mon - Fri PM shift covering teaching service.
  • Obstetrics - 2 blocks - on the deck. Night call is about Q 4 on this rotation.
  • Oral Health - 1 week - one on one with local providers covering the full spectrum of dental care.
  • Orthopedics - 1 block - one on one with Orthopedist in busy GJ office & Operating Suite.
  • Psych- 1 week - Explore Dr. Randall Reitz's world & plan your 3 yr experience with us.
  • Teaching Service- 4 blocks - adults & peds from our practice or without a local Doc.
  • Vacation - 3 weeks - starting in paradise. Raft the Colorado? Mountain Bike Fruita or Moab?

PGY-2

  • Community Medicine - 2 weeks expanding on 1st yr experience.
  • Elective - 1 block - First one in this year to give you more flexibility in planning choices.
  • Evidence Based Medicine - 1 week to focus on this necessary area & the PCMH.
  • General Surgery - 1 block - in & out patient, OR time, pre/post op care, consults, Trauma.
  • Gynecology - 1 block - Public Health clinic with procedural focus: Colposcopy, LEEP, Cryo, Endometrial Bx, IUDs, Implanon, etc.
  • Hospitalist Service - 2 weeks - one on one exposure with our in-house internists.
  • Management of Health Systems- 1 week - intensive experience with key professionals & faculty. COPIC practice mgt course, longitudinal topics at Ed Day.
  • Mole - 1-2 weeks - same as in 1st yr.
  • Neurology- 2 weeks - one on one with local neurologist.
  • Night Float - 1 block - shift work, same as in 1st yr.
  • Obstetrics - 1 block - same as in 1st yr.
  • Ophthalmology- 2 weeks - one on one with local Ophthalmologist.
  • Pediatrics- 3 weeks in/out patient one on one with local Pediatrics group.
  • Radiology - 1 week - one on one with hospital radiology group. Can you read all the films yet?
  • Rural in Buena Vista, CO Pop 2150 - 1 block. Experience what life will be like after graduation. (morning rush hour traffic may be a herd of elk!)
  • Teaching Service- 6 weeks - an amazing mix of dx & mgt experiences with you in charge.
  • Urology- 2 weeks - one on one with local urologist.
  • Vacation - 3 weeks - Hike several of the 56 14ers, Ski dozens of world class resorts.

PGY-3

  • Ambulatory Care - 2 weeks - Just like real practice!
  • Cardiology- 2 weeks - one on one with local Cardiologist.
  • Chief Resident- 1 block - Jr Faculty role including overseeing the inpatient service.
  • Copper Mtn.- 1 block - sports medicine/ortho at major destination resort. An unparalleled capstone experience - (housing & mileage paid for this & all required out of town blocks)
  • Dermatology - 2 weeks - one on one with local Dermatologist, supplements FMC experience.
  • Electives- 4 additional blocks - plan with your advisor to meet your personal interests. Many options to cover special areas & tailor your education for your future practice.
  • ENT - 3 weeks - one on one with ENT - a resident favorite!
  • Mole - 3 weeks - as noted above.
  • Night Float - 2 weeks - as noted above.
  • Pediatrics- 3 weeks in/out patient - polish your skills with dedicated group of Peds.
  • Pediatrics Specialties- 3 weeks - one on one rotation with our local or visiting sub-specialists: GI, Pulmonary, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Ortho, Surgery, Cardiology, etc.
  • Teaching Service - 1 block - assure your readiness for independent practice.
  • Vacation - 3 weeks - what will you do this year?
