Residency Program Curriculum

Our curriculum meets all requirements for the AAFP, ABFM & the ACGME.

The format is 13 four-week blocks/year.


Ambulatory Care: 2 weeks in your senior year— Just like a real practice!

Cardiology: 4 weeks; cardiologist group

Chief Resident: 1 block in 3rd year; oversee the inpatient service as a junior attending; 4call nights

Community Medicine: 1.5 blocks, exposure to local programs & clinic procedures,teach TarWars and Human Growth & Development; about 3 call days total

Dermatology: 2 weeks; dermatologist group

Electives: 5 blocks-planned with your mentor to meet your individual interests. There is a wide variety of options to cover any special interests & tailor your education.

ENT:
3 weeks; ENT group

ER:
1 block

Gynecology: 1 block, Public Health family planning clinic focus on procedures including colposcopy, LEEP, Endometrial Bx, Cryo, etc.

Hospitalist: 6 weeks of inpatient adults working with the award-winning team

Management of Health Systems: 1 week intensive experience with faculty & key professionals. Longitudinal-topics at Education Day, Colorado Physicians Insurance Company Practice Management course.

Neurology: 2 weeks; neurologist group

Night Float (Mole): 7 weeks; 6pm-7am shifts M-F Acute/urgent care & phone calls for our practice

Obstetrics: 3 blocks; q4 call

Ophthalmology: 2 weeks; ophthalmologist group

Oral Health: 1 week, full spectrum of dental care

Orthopedics/Sports Medicine: 2 blocks

  • Sports Medicine/orthopedics at Copper Mountain Resort: 1 block (paradise!)
  • Orthopedics: 1 block; orthopedics group

Pediatrics:  

  • Denver Health-Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic: 1 block
  • NICU: 1 block; SMH neonatologists
  • Pediatrics: pediatric group, inpatient & outpatient 1 block
  • Pediatric Specialty: 1 block rotate among various subspecialists in ortho, GI, pulmonology, ophthalmologh, surgery and cardiology
  • Inpatient Teaching Service: longitudinal

Psychology: 1 week & longitudinal

Rural: 1 block; Buena Vista, CO, population 2,150, with two of our graduates (where morning rush hour traffic may be a herd of elk!)

Teaching Service: 6 blocks at SMH; includes Adults, Peds & ICU; q4 call

Surgery: 2 blocks, about 5 call days

Urology: 2 weeks; urologist group

Three weeks vacation per year & CME time in years 2 and 3.
