Early Lung Cancer Screening

Initially, the work of Dr. Geno Saccomanno focused on lung cancer in uranium miners. The Institute continues to investigate methods of early detection, causes, and development of lung cancer.

Under the direction of Joel Bechtel, MD, and Tom Petty, MD, and in conjunction with Primary Care Partners, P.C. of Grand Junction, high-risk individuals were identified in a primary care setting and screened for early signs of lung cancer by using a combination of sputum cytology, CT scan, and chest x-ray. This project completed a five-year follow-up in which participants were monitored through ongoing screening and medical records review.

Outcomes of this study were published in the journal CHEST in 2005 and in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology in 2009, see links below:

The Saccomanno Research Institute was honored to present their early lung cancer screening research at the World Lung Cancer Conference sponsored by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, July 3 - 6, 2005 in Barcelona, Spain.
