St. Mary's Pedestrian Safety Campaign

January 14, 2007

St. Mary's provides medical care for many people injured in traffic accidents. An increasing number of pedestrians struck by vehicles, got us thinking. Our hospital's mission charges us with "improving the health of the individuals and communities we serve." There must be something we can do.

"Perhaps we all need a refresher on the basic traffic rules that, after all, are in place for the safety of everyone using our streets," says St. Mary's President/CEO Bob Ladenburger. That's the idea behind a newspaper and radio public service and education campaign launched Sunday, January 14, 2007. The campaign consists of four ads reminding everybody that "Pedestrian safety is no accident." ">Click here to view the first ad (pdf 156 KB).

"When we're hurried, distracted, or stressed, concentration suffers. We hope when area residents see the messages reminding us to look twice and save a life, an added degree of attention will help cut down the number of accidents and injuries," he says.

"This is really preventive care, much like fitness classes, prenatal care, and worksite ergonomic evaluations we provide,"says Ladenburger, "and it's something every one of us can do something about."
