Funding will help train the next generation of caregivers

January 28, 2008

St. Mary’s is more than a state-of-the art medical facility. It’s also a center for learning. Each year the hospital provides clinical training for approximately 500 nursing students, physicians specializing in family medicine, emergency medical services personnel, and hundreds of other healthcare professionals.

Knowing our region depends on St. Mary’s to help train tomorrow’s medical professionals, Congressman John Salazar recently secured $429,000 in federal funding for facilities and equipment for the new Saccomanno Education Center, says Penny Cowden, executive director of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation. Salazar, who represents Colorado’s third congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, understands it’s critical that St. Mary’s be prepared to meet western Colorado’s ever-growing need for well-trained healthcare personnel, she says.

The Saccomanno Education Center will be part of the Century Project, St. Mary’s expansion and remodeling project expected to be completed in 2009. “The new education facility will feature simulation, training, and communication technology that will bring medical education throughout western Colorado,” says Cowden.
