One of the most promising lessons of medical science is that we can reduce our risk of developing many illnesses, including cancer, by educating ourselves, being aware of our family history, and making healthy lifestyle choices. St. Mary’s Regional Cancer Center does more than treat cancer. The cancer center staff also provides education to help identify and reduce the risk of developing cancer and screening tests to detect the disease early when treatments can be most effective.
St. Mary’s staff includes Ruth Higdon, MD, the only gynecologic oncologist in western Colorado. Gynecologic oncologists are surgical oncologists trained in providing comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care for patients with ovarian, uterine, endometrial, cervical, and vulvar cancer.
While there are no guarantees, women can reduce their risk of developing cancers of the reproductive system by taking a proactive approach—following a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and making healthy lifestyle choices. And knowing her family history of gynecologic cancer can help a woman and her doctor take preventive action and determine the need and frequency of screening tests.
