St. Mary’s mammography center has been named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). St. Mary’s is the only western Colorado mammography center to earn this designation.
By awarding the status of Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes facilities that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound, including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Although not required for Breast Imaging Center of Excellence status, St. Mary’s also holds ACR accreditation for breast MRI.
“Our mammography center has voluntarily gone through a vigorous review process to ensure that we meet nationally accepted standards of care in breast imaging,” says Dennis DePascal, director of imaging services at St. Mary’s. “This designation tells our patients that our personnel are well qualified and our equipment and facility meet or exceed quality assurance and safety guidelines.”
Evaluations conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists, who are
experts in the field, have determined that St. Mary’s achieves high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.
The ACR is the largest and oldest imaging accrediting body in the U.S. and a professional organization of 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists.
