Effective treatment starts with screening

September 24, 2012

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and each year women are reminded of the importance of screening mammograms because detecting breast cancer in its early stages increases the effectiveness of treatment. But what good does it do to know you should have a screening breast exam if you can’t afford it and have no insurance?

That’s why the Junior Service League of Grand Junction started the fund-raising event Walk 4 Life, why St. Mary’s is a major sponsor, and why Sue Herrera got involved in the event 14 years ago. Herrera has scheduled appointments and greeted patients in St. Mary’s mammography center for the past 15 years.

“St. Mary’s has a great facility and provides all services for detecting and treating breast cancer,” Herrera says, “but there was no program that helped low-income women under 50 get those important screening mammograms before Walk 4 Life.” The annual event has funded more than 3,600 mammograms for Mesa County women. “That’s why I’m proud of what I do at St. Mary’s and of my involvement in Walk 4 Life. Come join us on October 6. It’s great fun for a great cause!”
