Start the year out right: donate blood
January 01, 2013
Any time is a good time to be a St. Mary’s blood donor. Because St. Mary’s provides blood products for accident, surgery, and cancer patients in most western Colorado hospitals and because blood products have a limited shelf life, blood donations are always needed. But January is a particularly good time to give!
“Illness and accidents don’t observe the holidays like we do. In January the demand for blood continues but, unfortunately, donations tend to drop off because people are busy skiing, traveling, and enjoying the holidays,” says Tony Colaizzi, business manager of St. Mary’s Regional Blood Center. Winter weather and seasonal sniffles and sneezing also keep some regular donors away.
“It takes about 1,000 donations every month to meet area hospitals’ demand for blood,” Colaizzi says. Whether you’re a regular donor or have never given before, donating blood is a good way to start out the new year. “If you’re looking for a New Years’ resolution with far-reaching benefits that’s easy to keep, resolve to donate blood in January and throughout the year,” Colaizzi adds.
