Learn strategies for managing lung disease

Here in western Colorado a glance out the window could take your breath away. But it should be the scenery, not the walk to the window, that leaves you gasping. Unfortunately, for people with chronic lung disease, every step can be a struggle. St. Mary’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation services and St. Mary’s Lung and Sleep Center can help people with lung disease get better control of their breathing and live more active, healthy lives.

Pulmonary rehab starts for some patients while they are hospitalized, explains James Thompson, MD, pulmonologist. St. Mary’s also offers outpatient rehab and a maintenance program for those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis and emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, and other lung conditions.

If you have difficulty breathing and tire easily, exercise may seem like a bad idea, but it’s really one of the best. “And exercise and good nutrition work hand in hand. What, when, and how you eat, also play a role in living your healthiest life with lung disease,” Thompson says. The proper diet and the right exercise will keep muscles strong and heart and lungs well supplied with oxygen.
