Volunteers support the community by helping seniors and students
August 19, 2014
The older we get the more we learn the importance of supporting each other. St. Mary’s Senior Companion, Foster Grandparent, and Gray Gourmet programs’ volunteers are proof that we do get older and wiser!
volunteers make it possible for senior citizens to remain in their own homes by providing transportation and companionship. If you can be a friend, you can be a senior companion.
Foster Grandparent volunteers provide invaluable attention, foster confidence, and are positive role models and mentors for young students.
volunteers staff eight meal sites and deliver almost 300 hot lunches per day to homebound seniors.
“Our senior volunteers tell me they give, but they get more—a sense of accomplishment, of giving back, of truly making a difference,” says Maggie Moorland, director of Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs. St. Mary’s volunteers get mileage reimbursement, interesting training opportunities, social gatherings, and accident and liability insurance. They may also qualify for an hourly, non-taxable stipend.
