Heroes Behind the Badges
March 16–28, 2015
Local heroes are facing off next week to save lives. On March 16, 2015, the Grand Junction Police Department and the Grand Junction Fire Department will kick off the first annual blood drive competition called “Heroes Behind the Badges.” The two groups will challenge each other to see who can get the most units of blood donated. The friendly competition will run until March 28. In addition to the challengers themselves donating, members of the public are encouraged to come to St. Mary’s Regional Blood Center or a blood mobile coach and donate blood in honor of the department of their choice.
Kick-off event, March 16
The “Heroes Behind the Badges” kick-off event will take place on Monday, March 16 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the Police and Fire Department at 625 Ute Ave., Grand Junction. There will be blood drives at other police and fire locations around town throughout the competition.
While the challenge is all in good fun, the purpose is quite serious. St. Mary’s Regional Blood Center supplies all of Mesa County’s, as well as the surrounding area's needs, for blood products. “Since blood has a limited shelf life, the supply always needs replenishing,” says Sherri Burns, donor recruiter for St. Mary’s.
The department with the most donations by March 28 will not only have bragging rights for the year and win a trophy, but St. Mary’s Regional Blood Center will donate $250 to the charity of their choice.
Every day, the public relies on the courageous services of first responders as they help during emergencies and keep dangerous criminals off the streets. Please help your local Fire and Police departments help the community by donating blood. You can donate blood at the Blood Center Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm and Saturday, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm or at various blood drive locations. Donors must be at least 16 years old (16 and 17 year olds must have a signed parental consent form), weigh at least 110 pounds, have a photo ID, and be in good general health.
