Denver, CO  (June 4, 2015) – SCL Health is pleased to appoint Dr. Shawn Dufford, MD, MBA, as Chief Medical Officer for the three-state, $2.4 billion health system. In this role, he will help set strategic direction for quality, safety and clinical regulatory matters for the system’s eight hospitals and other healthcare services.

Dr. Dufford has served as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Saint Joseph Hospital, an SCL Health hospital in Denver, since June 2011. He provided key clinical leadership in the hospital’s joint operating agreement with National Jewish Health, signed last summer, and the transition to a new hospital, which opened in December 2014. He had operational oversight of 1,450 medical staff and 300 mid-level providers.

Prior to joining Saint Joseph Hospital, Dr. Dufford served in a physician leadership role at Colorado Permanente Medical Group while also practicing medicine as an anesthesiologist. Before entering healthcare, he spent nine years as a Denver-area firefighter and paramedic, and he worked as a flight instructor and corporate pilot.

“Dr. Dufford brings a rare mix of leadership, medical expertise and life experience that will help our system achieve healthcare’s Triple Aim to improve health, provide better care, and lower costs,” said Michael Taylor, SCL Health’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Hospital Operations.

SCL Health, which operates hospitals in Colorado, Montana and Kansas, is nationally recognized for its quality, most recently being named among the top 20 percent of health systems nationwide by Truven Health Analytics.
