Community Health Risk Analysis of Oil and Gas Industry Health Concerns

In 2005, Saccomanno Research Institute and Mesa State College partnered to conduct a two year multi-level study. This collaboration addressed public concerns among Garfield County residents regarding the impacts of oil and gas activity to both the environment and public health. Through community focus groups, human health risk assessments, data collection and analysis, as well as communication, the findings provided recommendations for Garfield County to reduce these uncertainties of the perceived health risks. The study helped to serve as a focal point for collaborative resolutions to community and industry concerns over the balance between the risks and benefits of natural resource extraction.

The project involved:

  • Community focus groups
