International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC)

As part of this international study, the Saccomanno Research Institute worked with Mesa County School District 51 in the early recognition and management of asthma-like symptoms in young students. Early identification and management could lead to milder cases of asthma and may prevent permanent lung damage.

The goal was to gather baseline information about the prevalence of asthma symptoms in children in Mesa County. To date, 473 children from 15 local schools have participated.

Reducing School Absences Due to Asthma Exacerbations in Mesa County Valley School District 51

Through funding from the Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, and Pulmonary Disease (CCPD), Saccomanno Research Institute conducted an asthma management and care program targeted specifically at school-age children in Mesa County. Through a collaboration of Mesa County School District 51 and other community partners, asthma educational information and programs were implemented.

The goal was to develop a model of communication between children with asthma and their caretakers, school personnel, and healthcare providers resulting in reduced school absences and caretaker work absences, and in the long-term, better control for children with asthma.
