Pediatric Unit

Staffed by skilled and caring physicians and nurses, St. Mary's cheerful, upbeat pediatric unit cares for children from birth through age 17.

Each child's primary nurse, specially trained in pediatrics, works directly with the child's physician to coordinate treatment and ensure a comfortable hospital stay. To keep the nurses close to their young patients, the 10-room, 11-bed unit was designed with nurses' alcoves between each two patient rooms instead of the one centralized nurses' station found in most adult units.

Our pediatric nurses have an average of 14 years of experience on the unit. Many have obtained the advanced professional training and designation of "certified pediatric nurse." Staff members are specially trained in all aspects of care for children's critical care, life support, post-surgical care, even pediatric chemotherapy.

St. Mary's encourages parents to spend the night with their child, so each room contains a comfortable sleep chair, and meals can be provided for mom or dad. Every room can accommodate a crib for very young patients.

St. Mary's also provides the services of the only pediatric surgeon and pediatric trauma specialist between Denver and Salt Lake City. And, the hospital's trauma center is the only emergency care facility on the West Slope recognized for its commitment to quality pediatric care. A hospital social worker is also available to help pediatric patients and their families understand and discuss difficult issues.

Our pediatric unit and patient rooms are decorated in a kid-friendly western Colorado woodland creature theme. And because kids in the hospital need some diversions, each room has a television, video and DVD players, and video games. The unit also includes a well-stocked playroom.
