Cardiac Surgery & Coronary Care Unit

Cardiac Surgery
When other medical management techniques offer little hope, open-heart surgery provides astounding results for improved cardiac performance. Open-heart surgery often leads to an improvement in endurance and quality of life for patients suffering from coronary artery disease, valvular disease of the heart, diseases of the thoracic aorta, and end-stage cardiac disease.

St. Mary's Hospital performs more than 250 cardiac surgical procedures each year and uses the latest in equipment and instrumentation, including a state-of-the-art heart-lung machine and ultrasound technology. The team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other staff bring a wide range of expertise and experience. Constant assessment of the patient ensures optimal stability during every procedure.

Coronary Care Unit

After surgery, patients progress to the eight-bed Coronary Care Unit where they receive round-the-clock observation and monitoring. A dedicated and specially trained team of cardiologists, cardiac nurses, and other professionals care for patients recovering from cardiovascular illness, heart attacks, heart disease, or open-heart surgery.

St. Mary's Hospital follows the American Society of Critical Care Nurses Association ratio, which means each nurse is assigned only two patients. If one-to-one care is needed, however, special staffing arrangements are made.
